They knew they were mates even when Tobias was small, but due to Tobias being so young, Hayden wouldnt mate him until he was older. However, after a tragic accident, Hayden believes that Tobias has either been kidnapped or killed He doesnt give up hope though and searches for him for 5 years and then he scents him Tobias is alive One problem though Tobias doesnt remember Hayden or the Pack, in fact he has no memory recollection whatsoever, except for the past 5 years. His present life is not good crappy apartment and even a crappier job and he keeps getting this reoccurring dream that someone is coming for him Hayden is on his way to claim his mate Now to the plot issue. I dont want to do a spoiler here, but lets just say that Tobiass disappearance was never explained properly I didnt get why the author left it as it was why Tobias contact Hayden directly Hmmmmm. That omission cost the author a star from me, harsh I know, but it was a serious mistake.
